This is the light weight brother of the T1 2205 motor that was already tested, which shows some really fascinating variations.

Summary

This second 2205 motor, the "S" version, from BrotherHobby is really facinating.  In external appearance it is identical to the previous 2205 motor, but internally it has some interesting differences. The 2mm magnets have been replaced with 1.8mm, and the motor has been lightened from almost 28g to 26.5g.  The switch in magnets here did some really unexpected things, which we'll cover more in the results.  As with it's brother the build quality is very high. The specs for this motor state 7075 aluminum.  The bearings feel smooth, and it ran smooth on the stand. The build tolerances are tight and as with the other motors there is no play in shaft.  Even with the reduced magnet thickness, the air gap is very tight.  Overall these are very well built.

Now on to the bench results!

Test Results

There were a couple of things that really surprised me about this motor.  When I was sent the 1.8mm motor for testing I was expecting a slight peformance loss that was a cost for the reduced weight.  Instead, what I saw was a fairly significant performance INCREASE over the previous 2205 motor.  What's really stunning about these T1 2205 motors is that they actually manage to match the performance of a 2206 with a full mm less stator height.  On 5x4x3 props, this motor matches RPMs and response times of several of the current N52 class 2206 motors.  The 0.15mm laminations really seem to be the key here.  The Cobra Champion 2205 motor is also almost an identical performer, and has the same 0.15mm laminations, but not the arc magnets, so the peice that seems to be making a difference here is the laminations. All these factors combined make this a very high end performer, and the fact that the weight has been reduced so drastically puts this motor as a very strong competitor.  This combination of light weight, fast response, and top end power will be very hard to beat.
